Coloring pages are one of the easiest printables to make with AI, and one of the most useful. Print them for the kids (or yourself, no judgment), bundle them into a KDP coloring book or sell a themed pack on Etsy.

The trick is getting clean line art that can actually be colored, and not a gray, shaded sketch that looks great on screen and turns to mud on paper.

Here’s the prompt from my toolbox.

The filled prompt
A coloring book page for kids, portrait, pure black line art on a plain white background. Scene: a smiling cartoon bear having a picnic in a meadow, with a basket, a checkered blanket, a plain unlabeled jar of honey and a few butterflies. Outlines: thick, clean and fully closed so every shape can be colored in, with big simple areas and no tiny details. No shading, no gray, no color, no text, no border.

The filled prompt

Thick closed outlines, big open areas and not a speck of gray anywhere. A crayon-ready bear picnic.

Make It Yours!

Swap the brackets and go.

The template
A coloring book page for [AUDIENCE: kids, adults or seniors], portrait, pure black line art on a plain white background. Scene: [YOUR SUBJECT DOING SOMETHING, plus 3 or 4 props]. Outlines: [THICK AND SIMPLE for kids, or FINE AND DETAILED for adults], fully closed so every shape can be colored in. No shading, no gray, no color, no text, no border.

A few scenes to get you started:

  • A dinosaur watering a vegetable garden
  • A cat asleep in a stack of books
  • A lighthouse on a rocky shore with a sailboat
  • A tractor pulling a wagon of pumpkins

For adults, switch the outlines to fine and detailed and give it a busier scene, like a mandala garden or a cottage in the woods. Same prompt, different crowd.

The Line You Should Not Touch!

“No shading, no gray, no color, no text, no border.”

Leave that one alone. The gray is what kills a coloring page, because it prints as smudges and crayons won’t cover it.

Full Disclosure

My first run labeled the honey jar “HONEY” even though the prompt said no text. Generators love to label jars, boxes and signs. Asking for “a plain unlabeled jar of honey” fixed it, so do the same for any prop that normally carries words.

Building a KDP book? Check KDP’s current page size and resolution requirements before you upload, and run your pages through an upscaler if they come up short. If you like this kind of thing, the sellable activity page prompt is its cousin.

Selling These?

A coloring pack sells better with content behind it, like listings, blog posts and emails. That’s where my PLR shop comes in: done-for-you content you can put your name on and use as your own.

Go make a page. Then try to keep the kids from coloring it before you scan it. 😊
